AR XA Model This is the original AR turntable. (See AR History for more specific background on its development.) It had a two-piece aluminum platter which was driven by a small synchronous motor. Early versions had two motors to add the extra torque needed to start the heavy platter. A spring-suspended subchassis supported the platter and tonearm.

It contains a motor, a rubber belt, a highly machined platter/spindle, an ultra lightweight tone arm, a cartridge with stylus, and an on/off switch. The platter is suspended at three places underneath. Wow and flutter are indiscernible. You can spin the platter by hand and then go make a cup of coffee while it's still spinning..

When the AR XA turntable came out in 1961, it was an instant classic - almost immune to external shocks and vibrations, low in rumble, and priced at a shockingly affordable $58.00 ($489 today), less cartridge but complete with arm, dustcover, and even a stylus force gauge. (The price was soon raised to a more sustainable $78, or $658 today.)

A little history: My first serious turntable, acquired in 1969, was an Acoustic Research XA, a belt-driven integrated designed by the great Edgar Villchur. Its only switch was on/off, its features Spartan to say the least—going from 33.3 to 45rpm required repositioning the belt on the pulley (there was no pitch adjustment)—but its classic.

Acoustic Research XA Belt-Drive Turntable (17 reviews) The original AR turntable. Two part aluminium platter, suspended subchassis and belt drive from a low vibration AC Synchronous motor. Description The mounting location of the AR turntable is not at all critical, outside of the need to protect the cartridge from hum-inducing fields.
